Photochromic lenses can make stepping into bright sunlight more comfortable when you wear prescription glasses, reducing the need to squint or switch between pairs.
These light-adaptive lenses darken outdoors and gradually return toward clear indoors, while keeping your prescription unchanged.
But these lenses do not all behave in the same way. Some are designed to look clear indoors. Others retain a slight tint but offer extra darkening, including inside the car.
At Eye 2 Eye Optical in Sweifieh, Amman, we help you understand these differences and choose according to your prescription, daily routine and budget.
Photochromic lenses are also known as light-adaptive lenses or self-tinting lenses. These names describe lenses that automatically adjust their tint in response to activating light. Most everyday types respond mainly to ultraviolet light outdoors.
Transitions® is a brand of photochromic lenses, with different products for different needs. Other options include ZEISS PhotoFusion X and photochromic lenses from ASAHI-LITE.
The tint changes gradually as you move between environments. Your prescription stays the same: the lenses continue correcting your vision whether they are clear or dark.
Before choosing, consider three questions:
Your answers help us narrow down the suitable options.
Everyday light adaptation with a virtually clear indoor appearance
ZEISS PhotoFusion X photochromic lenses darken outdoors and return toward a virtually clear appearance indoors. They are designed for everyday movement between places such as your workplace, shops and outdoor spaces.
PhotoFusion X also incorporates UV protection and blue-violet light filtering within the ZEISS lens system.
An option to discuss if: you want ZEISS light-adaptive lenses for daily indoor and outdoor wear.
Everyday light adaptation with colour choice
Transitions GEN S photochromic lenses are designed to be clear indoors and darken outdoors. They offer fast light adaptation and a choice of colours, depending on the product and material ordered.
An option to discuss if: you want everyday light-adaptive lenses with a clear indoor appearance and suitable colour options.
How do GEN S and PhotoFusion X compare?
Both serve a similar everyday purpose. The choice also depends on the prescription lens design you need, available materials, colour, coating and price. We compare the actual products suitable for your order rather than treating one brand as the best choice for everyone.
Extra darkening for bright conditions, including inside the car
Transitions XTRActive photochromic lenses are designed to become extra dark outdoors and can also darken behind a car windshield.
The difference to consider indoors is their slight remaining tint. This may suit someone who prioritises reducing bright light, while someone who strongly prefers completely clear-looking lenses indoors may choose differently.
An option to discuss if: bright sunlight frequently bothers you, or activation inside the car is important.
Light adaptation with outdoor reflective glare reduction
A dark tint reduces overall brightness. Polarization helps reduce reflected glare from surfaces such as water and roads.
Transitions XTRActive Polarized lenses combine light adaptation with polarization that develops outdoors in sunlight. They retain a slight tint indoors.
This additional feature does not automatically make them the right choice for everyone. Its value depends on how much outdoor reflective glare bothers you.
An option to discuss if: you want everyday light-adaptive lenses with an additional benefit for reflective glare outdoors.
Options across selected materials and prescription ranges
ASAHI-LITE offers photochromic options in selected lens materials, including higher-index materials that can help reduce thickness for suitable prescriptions.
We check the exact product, available colours and compatible prescription range before recommending it.
An option to discuss if: you want to compare photochromic choices alongside your lens thickness requirements and budget.
Thinner photochromic options may also be available from the other manufacturers, depending on the product and prescription.
A car’s front windshield blocks much of the ultraviolet light that activates standard photochromic lenses. Consequently, GEN S and PhotoFusion X may darken much less inside the car than outdoors.
XTRActive products also respond to visible light, allowing them to darken behind the windshield. Their actual darkness still depends on the light, temperature and vehicle glass.
One distinction is especially important: XTRActive Polarized can darken in the car, but it is not classified as polarized behind the windshield. Its dynamic polarization benefit develops outdoors in sunlight.
For frequent daytime driving, we help you compare suitable light-adaptive lenses with dedicated polarized prescription sunglasses.
| Your main priority | Options to discuss |
|---|---|
| Clear or virtually clear lenses indoors, with outdoor darkening | Transitions GEN S or ZEISS PhotoFusion X |
| Extra darkening and activation inside the car | Transitions XTRActive |
| Light adaptation with reduced reflective glare outdoors | Transitions XTRActive Polarized |
| A particular material, thickness or budget requirement | Compatible products from ASAHI-LITE and the other ranges |
| A consistent sun tint with polarization for daytime driving | Polarized prescription sunglasses |
The final choice also depends on your prescription, frame and available product combinations.

The lenses take time to darken and fade. When you enter a building, some colour may remain while they adjust.
Darkening and fading do not necessarily happen at the same speed. We explain what to expect from your selected product before you order.
The same lenses can behave differently according to the conditions. Many photochromic lenses become darker in cooler weather than in very hot conditions.
Your lens material and colour can also affect performance. A stated laboratory response time should not be treated as a promise for every situation.
Photochromic glasses are convenient when you frequently move between indoors and outdoors.
For prolonged strong sunlight, reflective glare or frequent daytime driving, dedicated prescription sunglasses may still be more comfortable.
Also, lens darkness, UV protection and polarization describe different features. A darker appearance alone does not tell you how much UV protection or glare reduction a lens provides.
Photochromic options can be available with single vision, selected digital and progressive lens designs.
Depending on the product, they may also be combined with thinner high-index materials and anti-reflective or easy-clean coatings.
Each feature has a separate role: the prescription and lens design support your vision, the material influences properties such as thickness and weight, and the photochromic technology changes the tint.
We check which combinations are available for your prescription before confirming your order.
“Photochromic” describes one feature of the lens. It does not identify the complete product.
The price can also depend on:
We explain the specifications and price of the options suitable for you, so you can understand what you are choosing and whether the differences matter for your daily use.
Possibly. Bring your frame so we can inspect its condition and assess whether it is suitable for the lenses you want.
The frame’s size, shape, construction and condition all matter. We confirm suitability before proceeding.
You do not need to know which photochromic lenses to ask for before visiting us.
Bring your current glasses or prescription, and tell us where light causes the most difficulty: walking outdoors, driving, moving between buildings or spending time around reflective surfaces.
We discuss your preferences, explain suitable options and prices, and check their compatibility with your prescription and frame. We then take the required fitting measurements and adjust your glasses when you collect them.
